Sun Microsystems used the opening day of its CommunityOne open source developer conference to release its OpenSolaris Operating System. The new offering was unveiled three years after Sun announced its open-source plan for the Solaris operating system. Alongside, Sun also released the NetBeans Integrated Development Environment Early Access for PHP.

OpenSolaris is the first OS to feature Zettabyte File System (ZFS) as its default file system. ZFS includes features such as support for high storage capacities, integration of the concepts of filesystem and volume management, snapshots and copy-on-write clones, on-line integrity checking and repair, and RAID-Z. OpenSolaris also includes Solaris Containers to let developers build virtualization-aware applications that can run applications on more than 1,000 systems, from single machines through multi-CPU and multi-coresystems, according to Sun.

OpenSolaris will also be available on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). Sun also offers premium technical support for its MySQL database running on Amazon EC2. “With OpenSolaris and MySQL technical support now available on EC2, developers and IT staff gain powerful platform and database options for building scalable and reliable applications on Amazon's cloud computing platform,” said Adam Selipsky, vice president, Product Management and Developer Relations, Amazon Web Services.

Alongside this announcement, Sun and the NetBeans community jointly announced an early access build of new support within the NetBeans IDE for the PHP scripting language, which Sun said allows NetBeans to be used with Web 2.0-style developers.

NetBeans IDE Early Access for PHP includes intelligent editing features such as prioritized code completion, instant rename, mark occurrences, dynamic code templates and easy navigation. Also new is the general availability of NetBeans 6.1 IDE. This version includes new features for developing Ajax Web applications using JavaScript, as well as improved integrations with Sun's MySQL database.

Commenting on this release Octavian Tanase, senior director of NetBeans Engineering, Sun Microsystems said, "Dynamic languages continue to be a major focus for Sun and we are thrilled to provide NetBeans IDE Early Access for PHP to this community." He further added saying that, "Support for JavaScript technology, integration with MySQL database and a host of other powerful features position NetBeans as a premier IDE for PHP developers everywhere."
