Apple Inc. introduced its latest pride and joy, the MacBook Air, to Singapore late last week.

Famously referred to as “the world’s thinnest notebook”, the MacBook Air measures 0.4cm at its thinnest point and 1.94cm at its maximum height, which according to Apple, is less than then the thinnest point on competing notebooks.

The MacBook Air-- the third in the Mac notebook lineup after the MacBook and the MacBook Pro-- is designed with a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display and a full-size, backlit keyboard, which makes its ideal for dimly lit environments such as airplanes, studios or conference halls and a built-in ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness of the keys as well as the display brightness for optimal visibility.

It trackpad comes with multi-touch gesture support and is sensitive enough to allow users to pinch, rotate and swipe files with their fingers, making it more intuitive than ever to browse and rotate photos or zoom into web pages.

Other features include a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing, a 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache, and standard features such as 2GB of memory, an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive, and the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi technology and Bluetooth 2.1.

MacBook Air delivers up to five hours of battery life for wireless productivity and includes AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi networking, which delivers up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g.

However, Apple’s latest notebook does not come integrated with a DVD drive and has to be separately purchased (MacBook Air SuperDrive) and offers only one USB 2.0 port.

In its effort to stay “green” Apple said that the MacBook Air is its first mercury-free LCD display with arsenic-free glass and brominated flame retardant-free material for the majority of circuit boards as well as PVC-free internal cables. In addition, the MacBook Air apparently consumes the least amount of power of any Mac and its aluminum enclosure is a material highly desired by recyclers.

Every MacBook Air comes with iLife ‘08, the latest update ever to Apple’s award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications, featuring a major new version of iPhoto and a completely reinvented iMovie, both seamlessly integrated with the new .Mac Web Gallery for online photo and video sharing.

The new MacBook Air also comes with Leopard, Apple’s sixth major operating system release. Leopard introduces Time Machine, a solution that allows one to automatically back up everything on a Mac.

Built to work seamlessly with Time Machine is the Time Capsule, which was also launched in tandem with the MacBook Air, and allows users to wirelessly back up all of the data on their Macs, find lost files and even restore all of their software.

With the Time Capsule, in the event a file is lost, users can wirelessly search back through time to find deleted files, applications, photos and other digital media and then instantly restore the file.

With a fully integrated 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station, the Time Capsule can serve as a backup solution for multiple computers as well.

The MacBook Air is available now through the Apple Online Store and authorized resellers for a suggested retail price of SGD 2988. The Time Capsule retails at SGD 489 for a 500GB model and SGD 788 for a 1TB model.
