Singapore is setting aside SGD 750 million to enhance its broadband access speeds in a bid help out with the heavy cost of constructing the Next Generation National Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN), a new Internet superhighway, which will allow it to maintain its competitive edge in the globalized economy.
Once materialized, the Next Gen NBN will aim to provide new internet services and encourage the deployment of Web based applications such as e-learning, high-definition video conference and telemedicine.
Currently, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) is looking to task a company to put up the new Internet pipes that will deliver broadband speeds up to one GBps or gigabit per second to businesses and homes.
The IDA is at present looking at 12 hopefuls that include local companies such as Starhub and SingTel as well as international players like Japan’s NTT-West and Siemens networks.
The new broadband network is expected to partly operational as early as 2010 and fully deployed by 2015. |
